Keying, High Imperial Commissioner, &c., &c., sends the following reply to a letter of the Honourable Envoy, respecting the place where the money for the stolen property is to be paid.

It would appear from a report of the Heang-slan magistrate regarding the money payable for the stolen articles, that the gentry of the clan of Hwang-a-kwan duly handed over 1630 Dollars, being 1178 taels 6 mace silver in weight. This being sent to Canton, in order to be made over to Wilson, I the Great Minister found on examination that it amounted to the losses incurred by the said Wilson. I have therefore sent it to Consul Macgregor, that he may receive it and hand it over to Wilson,

Whilst forwarding this answer I wish you much happiness, and address the same To His Excellency Her Britannic Majesty's Plenipotentiary,

Sir John F. Davis, Bart., &c., &c., &c. Taoukwang, 27th year, 12th month, 20th day, (25th January, 1848.) Received 27th instant.

(True Translation,)

CHARLES GUTZLAFF, Chinese Secretary.

(True Copy,)

A. R. JOHNSTON.
